The season of mangoes is here again! The land of Kutch and its neighborhood is simmering in summer and it is also the time of tasty mangoes with sunset yellowish colour everywhere.
There are different varieties of mangoes in the Kutchi region but the Kutch Kesar is the most famous among them. It is a variety that grows abundantly in this region owing to the hot climate which is said to be a necessity for tasty Kutch Kesars. The demand for the Kutch Kesar has seen a drastic increase in the recent years in India as well as abroad and that has made farmers turn to its cultivation than before. We see “wadis” (gardens) of mango trees on our way to Bhuj that mainly focuss on the cultivation and export of these Kutch Kesar mangoes.
The Kutch Kesar mangoes are medium sized(four would make a kilo)and are fleshy. They are juicy and very yummy to eat. The taste is so delicious that one would crave for more. The price of these mangoes is high in the beginning and the end of the season while it takes a dip in between. A box of 5 kgs can be bought for Rs.300 to 400 and depends on how well one is good at bargaining.
Go around in Kutch during this time, you will find every man with a box or a packet of the Kutch Kesar. The season is almost going to end this year.
